In this guitar lesson, we are going to discover what to expect when learning to play the guitar. Learning how to play guitar is a great thing to do for anyone. It consists of a personal journey of self-discovery that you take while learning how to develop self-confidence through new skill sets.
It has been proven time and time again that learning how to play an instrument has many benefits at any age. Benefits that stimulate brain cells. Benefits that build eye-hand coordination as well as hand-to-hand coordination.
If you plan on learning to play the guitar, here are some tips and things that you can expect to run into along your journey:
Know why you want to learn guitar.
Knowing why you want to learn to play the guitar will help you later down the line. It will give you focus and allow you to set goals of what you want to accomplish and how you want to accomplish them. Knowing why will help keep you going through the tough times.
Get the right tools
If you like the sound of the acoustic guitar or someone you like to listen to plays the acoustic, then start out playing that type of guitar. But if you’re more inspired by the electric, I recommend you get that type of guitar along with an amplifier to go with it.
The right kind of tools, in the beginning, can make a HUGE difference in your progress at the beginning of your journey. Get this correct and it will be smooth sailing. Get this wrong, and it will be a headache and frustration.
Learn guitar training course.
At the beginning of learning anything new is the hardest. That is why it is very important to find the right training. Either from a book, a class, a video course, or possibly a private instructor. Any of these options can help.
Make sure to find an option that works for you. Everyone learns differently so try out a few different things until you find a training program that fits your personality. This will help get you inspired to learn and keep you motivated to practice.
Daily application
Anytime you decide to learn anything, you must put in the daily application. In music, this is called practice. You must dedicate yourself to a daily practice routine. Even if it’s just for ten minutes a day.
A little bit of application daily will benefit you much more than if you practice for 30 minutes one day and then don’t practice for the next three days.
Muscle development
You can also expect to go through some muscle development in your hands, fingers, and brain. Since you are learning to do things you don’t normally do (hold a guitar neck and press down on strings while strumming them) your fingers, hands, and brain need time to develop these new skills.
Make sure to take the time to let this happen. I know excitement can be high in the beginning and progress with some things might come slow, but if you take your time with it, you’ll develop better and see greater results.
