Should you Start With An Acoustic Or Electric Guitar?

In today's lesson, we will answer the age-old question. Should you start with an acoustic or electric guitar? Deciding whether to begin your musical journey with an acoustic or electric guitar depends on personal preference and musical aspirations. And this is what we are going to look at in this lesson. By the end, you will be able to make a more informed decision on which to start with.

Acoustic guitars

These are often recommended for beginners due to their simplicity and portability; they do not require additional equipment like amplifiers, making them a more cost-effective choice initially. The thicker strings and slightly higher action on acoustic guitars can help develop finger strength and dexterity, which is beneficial for beginners.

The downside to acoustic guitars is that the neck is often a bit wider, the strings a bit thicker, and they require more finger strength to hold down when playing chords and melody lines. But if the person who inspires you to play does it on an acoustic guitar, then this would be the one to choose.

However, if you are drawn to genres like rock or metal, you might prefer starting with an electric guitar.

Electric guitars

Electric guitars typically have lighter strings and a narrower neck, which can make them easier to play for some beginners. Since this is the case, holding down strings when forming chords can be less strainous on the hands. Additionally, they offer a wide range of sound possibilities that can be created when paired with effects and amplifiers.

The downside to the electric when just starting is that it is more of an investment because it does require an amplifier and a cable to hook the two together. This can be an added cost. So it is best to look into this. Although if the person who inspires you to play does it on an electric, then I recommend you go with that.

Ultimately, your choice should align with your musical interests and goals, ensuring that you stay motivated and excited about learning.

Learning to play the guitar, whether it be an electric or an acoustic, is a rewarding journey that can enrich your life in numerous ways.. Here are a few to take into consideration.

#1: Enhancing Cognitive Functions

One of the most significant benefits of learning to play the guitar is its positive impact on cognitive functions. Playing the guitar requires the coordination of multiple skills simultaneously, such as hand-eye coordination, memory, and concentration.

These activities stimulate the brain, improving cognitive functions and potentially increasing IQ levels. Studies have shown that musicians often have better problem-solving skills and enhanced memory capabilities compared to non-musicians.

#2: Boosting Emotional Well-being

Music has a profound effect on emotions, and playing the guitar can be a powerful emotional outlet. Whether it's strumming a calming acoustic tune or shredding an electrifying solo, playing the guitar allows you to express your emotions and relieve stress.

This emotional release can lead to improved mood, reduced anxiety, and even lower levels of depression. Additionally, the sense of accomplishment from mastering a new song or technique can boost self-esteem and confidence.

#3: Fostering Social Connections

Learning to play the guitar can also enhance your social life. Joining a band, participating in jam sessions, or simply playing with friends can create a sense of community and belonging. These social interactions can lead to lasting friendships.

Connections with people who share a similar passion for music. Moreover, playing the guitar makes you an attractive addition to social gatherings, providing entertainment and a chance to connect with others through music.

#4: Versatility and Creative Expression

The guitar is an incredibly versatile instrument, capable of producing a wide range of sounds and styles. Whether you're interested in rock, blues, jazz, classical, or folk, the guitar can accommodate your musical tastes.

This versatility allows for endless creative expression, enabling you to write music of your own and develop a unique style. The ability to experiment with different techniques and genres can keep your musical journey exciting and engaging.

#5: Improving Physical Health

Playing the guitar can also have physical health benefits. The act of playing can improve hand and finger dexterity, strengthen hand muscles, and enhance coordination. For beginners, these things can boost social skills as well as self-confidence.

Not to mention, it has been proven that learning a musical instrument can help improve power in brain power. The reason for this is that when you learn to play music through an instrument, you activate parts of the brain that are only done through learning music.
