Common challenges for beginners

1. Realizing it’s not an overnight success

2. It’s not always fun to learn the fundamentals

3. Reading guitar notation is not easy to conquer

4. Learning new concepts and techniques

5. Pain in muscle development

As well as staying motivated to practice daily.

But how to get through them? How do we keep heading down the journey despite these challenges and more we will face later down the line? Remember, if we take it just one step at a time, we will get there. We just have to develop patience and persistence.

Realizing it’s not an overnight success

If you can get this through your head early in your development, it will make it much easier for you to progress.

Many people have unrealistic expectations of how long it will take for them to learn an instrument. They eventually lose faith that they can do it, lose motivation, and eventually quit.

It’s not always fun to learn the fundamentals

When it comes to learning the guitar, beginner guitar players must learn to master the fundamentals. The fundamentals of playing guitar are what set the foundation for all learning to come to stand on. Such things as knowing what chords to play, how to strum them to create rhythm, what scales to play, and how to use them to create melody.

Along with knowing some basic music theory. All these things and more will give you the ability to not only build a great musical foundation but also build self-confidence in your guitar playing.

Reading guitar notation is not always easy

This one is very important. I say this because most guitar players don’t read music notation. They play by ear. Of course, there is nothing wrong with this, but being able to read guitar notation will only enhance your abilities.

It has been a proven fact that the mind perceives information differently from listening to it than when reading it. This is so true with music. When you learn to read guitar notation, you get insights into how music is constructed that you don’t get from just playing by ear.

Learning new concepts and techniques

This is another hurdle that must be overcome. The reason this is a challenge for most beginner guitar players is that music is a language.

And just like any other language, the mind and body will need time to process all the different things that it will be doing as it begin to develop the skillset of this new language. So, be patient and take your time. It will get easier as you head down your journey.

Pain in muscle development

This is unavoidable. As the old saying goes, no pain, no gain. And how true that is for playing guitar. The reason for this is that the activity of playing guitar is like no other in your daily life. You are holding down metal wires to a piece of wood.

You are attempting to create beautiful music out of wood and metal. This is no easy task for anyone. And growing pains are inevitable. Think of it as a rite of passage. Know that all great guitar players had to go through it. They did, I did, and you will too.

Motivation to practice daily

It is all the things stated above that keep people from easily moving forward daily. To get good at playing guitar, you must be motivated to practice daily. Without that, your progression will be slow, and you’ll eventually give up.

But like I said in the beginning, if you anticipate you’re going to have some challenges and embrace them as a right of passage to accomplish something many people quit at, it will give you what you need to come out as a winner.

DIY but not by yourself
