Can An Adult Learn To Play Guitar On Their Own?

In today’s lesson, we are going to discuss adult learning. Can an adult learn to play the guitar on their own? Yes, they can. They just need to have a desire to learn and be willing to act on that desire until the mission is accomplished.

You Need Desire

Anyone with the desire to learn can learn just about anything. I say just about because there might be certain physical obstacles at certain ages for certain things. But besides that, you can learn just bout anything you choose as long as you have the desire to do so.

Desire is everything when it comes to accomplishing anything. Even learning guitar. If you have a burning desire to do something (anything), you will do whatever it takes to make it happen. It’s that simple. But you must have that burning desire!

Do you have that?

Anyone Can Learn

When it comes to playing guitar, anyone can learn on their own at just about any age. Doesn’t matter if you’re 17 or 70. And as far as learning on your own, that is completely doable at any age. You just need to consider a few things. What style of music do you want to play? Do you want to learn the acoustic or the electric? Which one would be easier for you to start on?

As an adult, you need to be able to answer these questions. After you do, you then need to look into which method might work best for your learning style. If you’re not sure, I recommend you try out a few different types. Let's take a look at a few to consider.

Four Ways To Learn On Your Own

#1: YouTube videos

#2: Guitar method books

#3: Friends and family

#4: Online Video Course

#5: Private One-on-one Instruction

Opton #1: YouTube vidoes

Any of these five choices can work, and do work. You just have to decide which one is best. I recommend you try the YouTube videos to begin with.

Learning From YouTube videos.

These are free and readily available 24 hours a day. You just look for someone teaching beginner lessons and follow their advice. They will be happy to get you started and lead you in the right direction. Some channels are geared specifically toward beginners.

YouTube has made learning anything you want easier than ever before, and with the invention of smartphones, you now have multiple instructors at your fingertips. No more having to go to the store or library to get a DVD. Everything now comes to you.

And if you have questions, you can leave it in the comments below and the teacher can get back with you. How cool is that? I wish I had YouTube when I was younger. This is a great place to start, and highly recommended. Who know's you might learn faster than you ever thought possible.

Option #2: Method books

Guitar Method Books. Dwayne Jenkins

Learning from method books has always been a great option, as that is how I learned many, many years ago. The reason why this worked then, works now, and will work in the future is because of the way they are designed. Method books provide a step-by-step learning system of learning that is easy to follow. They usually have pictures, diagrams, and notation that make it easy to understand musical concepts and techniques.

This is why I authored my own. I did this because I know this method of learning works. You can go at your own pace, you get to practice and learn on your schedule. You can take your book anywhere you want to learn. Inside your bedroom, or outside on your porch on a nice sunny day. You can decide what is best for you. So if this style of learning appeals to you, get a method book on my website, and give it a try. You just might be amazed at what you accomplish.

Option #3: Friends and family

Teaching a friend how to play the guitar

Friends and family are also a great option to learn the guitar. It's always good learning from a friend, as you can get instant feedback and have fun in the process. No matter if you're learning your favorite guitar riff or song, this can be a great option.

Learning something new no matter what it is can always be a bit challenging. Especially the guitar. How to form chords, how to play the strings. All this can be overwhelming at first. But a good friend or family member can ease the frustion and take out the confusion. If you know someone who plays guitar, they might be able to teach you your favorite song. Then, you'll be on your way.

Option #4: Online video course

Online video courses are a great way to learn. Especially if you are a DIY kind of person.

You get to go at your own pace. You can learn around your schedule. And you have lifetime access to the course. Not to mention, they give you a chance to develop self-discipline and time management.

Learning online is all the rage these days. With the digital age that we now live in, everyone is learning online at one point or the other. Unlike YouTube, an online course gives you step-by-step instructions with maximum detail. Here is a course I created for the total beginner. It works with both electric and acoustic guitars. So, no matter which one you want to learn, this course will get you started.

Option #5: Private one-on-one instruction

Private One-on-one Instruction

Last but not least, we have private one-on-one instruction. I think out of all the methods, this one is the best. The reason for this is because you can get lessons tailored to your specific interest and skill level. If you want to strum chords on the acoustic, lessons can be tailored to that.

If you want to rock out to Metallica, lessons can be tailored to that as well. I offer private instruction in both acoustic and electric guitar. The lessons are tailored to your interests, private lessons offer the quickest route to success. Not to mention that it can be a whole lot of fun. You can read what some of my students are saying about my lessons.

No matter what option you choose to learn, I recommend you give one or two, if not all of them a try. I know if you do, you'll discover what option is best and see some quick results. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at my website.

Thanks for your time reading, and best of luck.

Until our next lesson, take care.

Sincerely, Dwayne Jenkins
